TOURIST-ORIENTED LINES

ARLBERG LINE Innsbruck – Bludenz

Arlberg line is one of the most spectacular railway lines in Austria. Since 1884 this railway connects Tyrol with Vorarlberg. Before these days Vorarlberg could only be reached via Bavarian territory. Numerous bridges, viaducts and tunnels mark this romantic railway line. The spectacular line stretches from the Tyrolian town of Landeck, via Langen am Arlberg (1.217 m / 3.993 feet above sea-level) to Bludenz in Vorarlberg. With a maximum gradient of 31‰ (3,1m/100m) the Arlberg line is one of the steepest railway lines, on which there is regular passenger- and goods traffic.

Trains run daily all-year and offer 1st and 2nd class coaches as well as dining cars.

SEMMERING LINE Wiener Neustadt – Bruck an der Mur

On December 2, 1998, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee inscribed the Semmering Railway as the world’s first railway on the world heritage list. The justification for inscription of the “Ghega Railway” read “the Semmering Railway represents an outstanding technological solution to a major physical problem in the construction of early railways”.

Moreover, with the construction of the Semmering Railway, “areas of great natural beauty became more easily accessible and as a result these were developed for residential and recreational use, creating a new form of cultural landscape”. On an overall length of 41.825 m, the railway line, which runs over 16 viaducts and through 15 tunnels on a stretch of 5.420 m between Gloggnitz and Semmering, overcomes a difference in altitude of 460 m.
