Douro Line

Bring the whole group, and the bikes

The Douro Line runs right alongside some of northern Portugal's best cycling. Take the train out together, ride the trails, and let the train carry you home.

Group travel with bicycles on the Douro Line

CP, Portugal's national rail operator, runs a dedicated service for groups who want to travel with their bikes on the Douro Line. Because bike space on trains is limited, groups need to arrange the trip ahead of time so there's room for everyone's equipment.

Before you go, check the CP timetables and the general rules for carrying bikes on board.

  1. Plan your routePick a trail below and the stations you'll travel between.
  2. Book in advanceFill in CP's group travel form with how many people are coming and how many bikes.
  3. RideBoard with your group, load the bikes, and enjoy the valley.

Three rides from the Douro Line

Each of these routes can be reached by train, from a short riverside spin to a full day on a converted railway.

34km

Sabor Eco-Trail

Pocinho to Carviçais, starting near Pocinho station

A walking and cycling path laid along the route of the old Sabor railway, which once branched off the Douro from Pocinho. The trail is signposted and has benches and rest stops, with lighting through the villages of Moncorvo, Larinho, Carvalhal and Carviçais. Several original railway buildings have been restored as shelters and support points.

Expect wide views: the Baixo Sabor valley and Serra do Reboredo between Torre de Moncorvo and Carviçais, and the Douro valley on the stretch down to Pocinho. The area also puts you within reach of the Douro International Natural Park, the Alto Douro wine region and the Côa Valley rock art.

Régua Riverside Cycle Path

Along the river in Peso da Régua, next to Régua station

A short, easy route on the banks of the Douro in the heart of the Alto Douro Wine Region, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2001. It's a relaxed way to see the town from the waterfront.

Along the way you pass the town centre, the Casa do Douro, the old metal bridge, the Douro Museum, the Junqueira and Mercadorias quays and the Cruzeiro chapel. There's bike parking at both ends of the path and at Régua station.

Paredes City Cycle Route

Paredes station sits on the Douro Line, so you can roll straight off the train and onto the route.

Tourist services

Not every trip on the Douro Line has to be about getting somewhere. CP's heritage train turns the ride itself into the day out.

Douro Historical Train

Five wooden coaches from the early 1900s run between Régua and Tua along the river, through the UNESCO-listed Alto Douro Wine Region. In 2026 the train is pulled by a 1400-series diesel locomotive in its original colours, as restrictions on two bridges currently keep the steam locomotive off the line.

The trip starts at Régua with a glass of Port and live regional music. At Tua there's time to stretch your legs and browse stalls of local produce, and on the way back the train stops at Pinhão, whose station is known for its painted azulejo tile panels showing the grape harvest and rabelo boats.

Regional services

For everyday travel up the valley, regional trains run the full length of the line from Porto to Pocinho, and they're the ones that get you and your bike to the trails.

MiraDouro

The MiraDouro runs every day in both directions between Porto São Bento and Pocinho, calling at Régua and Pinhão. It pairs a 1400-series diesel locomotive with restored carriages: Swiss-built Schindler coaches from the late 1940s and Portuguese Sorefame coaches from the early 1970s, both with windows you can open as you go.

Some second-class carriages have been fitted to carry bicycles, which makes this the train to use for the routes above. Bike space differs from train to train, so check before you travel, and book through the group form if you're bringing several bikes.
